Pipeline Monitoring: Detection, Leaks, and Earthworks (PMS)

We supplied a Leak Detection System for a new Gas Pipeline with the objective of mitigating and preventing “huachicoleo”. We implemented the OptaSense TM system, providing operational personnel with an essential tool to prevent excavations or intrusions into the right of way, and coordinating the dispatch of field personnel in the event of alerts of unusual activities.

Challenge
The complications presented in Phase 1 of the Gas Pipeline represented a challenge both for us and for the customer. We had to coordinate with suppliers for the correct placement of the fiber optic pipeline along the 300 km of the Gas Pipeline. In addition, we detect and correct irregularities in the HDPE duct, and perform the fusion and connection of the optical fiber. Finally, we install, connect and test the equipment in different locations, calibrating the system to ensure accurate detection.
Solution
We installed an OptaSense four-mode leak and intrusion detection system, using Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology. This system converts a fiber optic cable into a series of virtual “microphones” that monitor the pipeline in real time and convert acoustic data into specific alerts. This allows for the detection and geolocation of leaks and intrusions in real time, facilitating a quick response to any threat. Collaboration with ENGIE engineers was crucial for a smooth implementation.
“It was a great challenge to successfully manage Optasense's technical and project work teams in England and Houston, for the timely delivery of the technical documentation of the project, as well as the configuration, testing and training of the system.”
The project was completed on time and on budget. The benefits were visualized when ENGIE hired us for support and maintenance, confirming the usefulness of the system in safeguarding the integrity of the gas pipeline. The successful implementation and customer satisfaction have allowed us to maintain an ongoing relationship with the customer.

Testimony

“With the support of Apollocom, we left them the responsibility for this system, trusting in their professionalism. Apollocom has a high-level team with sufficient skills and capabilities to develop and manage projects. Their dedication and passion should be highlighted, so I have no problem sending this letter.”

- Enrique Brunner Cruz Engineer, Project Engineer.

Conclusion
The success of the project has allowed for a lasting relationship with the client. As of today, we maintain continuous support with other important projects, providing maintenance and updating of the platform for ENGIE since implementation.
